he bride has chosen her bridesmaids, their dresses have been bought, now it's time to decide on the bridesmaid jewelry.

The bride should first decide whether or not she will be choosing and purchasing

the jewelry for her bridesmaids or if she will be leaving it up to her bridesmaids to decide on their own jewelry. Often, a bride will purchase the jewelry for her bridesmaids as her wedding gift to them.

Here are a few questions for the bride to consider when deciding what jewelry the bridesmaids will wear:

  • Do you want all the bridesmaids jewelry to be identical or can it vary in style or color?
  • Do you want the bridesmaids to wear a necklace? Will the necklace be a pendant or choker style?
  • Do you want them to wear earrings? Will they be post or dangle earrings?
  • Do you want them to wear a bracelet, a brooch, a ring, or hair pins?
  • Do you want the jewelry to be the same color as the dress, a complementing color, or without color?
  • Do you want the jewelry to be set in gold or silver?

There are no right or wrong answers to these questions, just what the bride wants. A popular choice for the bridesmaids is a matching necklace and earring

set, some dresses might look best with only earrings, and other outfits would look great accented with a bracelet. Just don't overdo it.

Some brides will want the bridesmaids jewelry to match and some brides may choose to match the jewelry in color but vary in style to reflect the uniqueness of each bridesmaid.

While there are many options for bridesmaids jewelry, here are a few good guidelines:

  • Choose jewelry that complements and enhances the bridesmaids dresses
  • Choose jewelry that looks good on each bridesmaid and is something they will each enjoy wearing
  • Keep it simple and not overpowering
  • The bridesmaids jewelry is usually less elaborate than the brides jewelry

JEWELRY OPTIONS: Beautiful bridesmaids jewelry is available in a wide range of styles, colors and prices, including both fine jewelry and fashion jewelry. Fine jewelry would include cultured pearls, colored gemstones or diamonds. Fashion jewelry ranges from the sparkly look of rhinestones to an upscale look of Swarovski crystal, cubic zirconia, semi-precious stones and freshwater pearls.

SHOPPING TIP: When you go shopping for the jewelry, it's helpful to bring both a picture and color swatch of the bridesmaid's dresses. When choosing jewelry colors, it's not a good idea to try to pick out the right color hue or shade from memory, but to have the color with you and be able to match without guessing. Also, try to wear a top with a similar neckline so you can try the jewelry on and see if it works with the dress neckline.

TRY IT ON: While it helps to look thru your bridal magazines and view bridal web pages (both great things to do), nothing is better than actually trying on the jewelry. Often the way the jewelry looks on a page or on display is not the way it looks on. Sometimes you try it on and you like it better than you thought, sometimes you try it on and decide it's not really what you want. Leave yourself time to be able to try on the jewelry with the dresses and find just the right look for the bridesmaids.

ASK THE RETURN POLICY: If there is a chance you will be returning items if they don't work out, ask the return policy before you buy. Find out the time allowed for returns and if returns are for exchange or credit. Many times a store will “hold” an item for you if you ask, that way you can come back and try on the jewelry with the dresses before you make a decision.
