Tiaras have been worn by women for thousands of years to celebrate their beauty, elegance and dignity. The bridal tiara is a piece of jewelry that accents your hairstyle, frames your face, and adds the finishing touch to your veil. Your bridal tiara should complement your wedding dress and coordinate with your other wedding jewelry.

When choosing a bridal headpiece, take into account the shape of your face, your wedding day hairstyle, and the details of your wedding dress. With so many styles of headpieces available, how do you find the best one for you?

Here are some guidelines to help you with your decision.

Wedding Dress Details

You start with the wedding dress, and then you find the accessories to complement it. Usually it's best to work your way up, starting with the necklace, then upward to the earrings and headpiece, coordinating as you go.

The accents in your tiara should match the accents on your wedding dress and wedding jewelry. Wear crystals with crystals, pearls with pearls. A tiara with crystals will work with any gown, but to wear a tiara with pearls it should match either the dress or necklace and earrings.

The color tone of the tiara should also match the color tone of the wedding dress and wedding jewelry. Match silver tone to silver and gold tone to gold. If you are wearing pearls, match the color tone of the pearls. If you are wearing an ivory dress, a good choice would be a tiara with a gold tone or ivory pearl accents. If you are wearing a white dress, a tiara with silver tone, crystals, or white pearls would be a good choice.

Look to coordinate the design in your tiara to the design in your wedding dress. If your wedding dress has a floral design, look for a tiara with a floral design. If your dress has a rosebud design, look for a tiara with a rosebud design. By continuing the design, it pulls the look together.

Match the styles. A more modern wedding dress with a straight silhouette, might look better with a more modern tiara with straight, geometric lines, while other styles of dresses would look better with tiaras with curving and rounded features. An antique wedding dress would look best with an antique style of tiara.

Wedding Day Hairstyle

Before deciding on the style of headpiece, you should know what hairstyle you will have on your wedding day. Although some headpieces are versatile and work with many hairstyles, some will not. If you have short hair, a headband may work best, or if you want to wear a tiara, choose a lighter, more delicate style, that won’t need lots of pins to hold it in place.

Shapes of Faces

A tiara should provide the proper frame for your face, and enhance your shape, so that it makes you look better. The tiara should not be the focus of attention, it should draw everyone's attention to your face and not away from it.

If you have round face, look for a tiara with some height or one that has a peak, to make your face appear longer and thinner.

If you have a long face, look for a headband or tiara with little or no height, and one that extends over your head from one side to the other at an even height.

If you have an oval face, avoid pieces with a peak at the top, which will make your face look longer. To make your face look less oval, wear a headband, forehead piece, or a back piece.

If you have a full face, wear a tiara that peaks into a “V” at the top to give an illusion of a longer face.

Styles of Headpieces

A tiara, placed on the top of the head like a crown, can be worn with or without a veil. A tiara provides the most impressive look of all headpieces, and is understandingly known as the “princess of headpieces.” It is a wonderful accent for any style of wedding dress, from a simple sheath to an elegant ball gown. A tiara complements both upswept hairstyles and shorter hairstyles.

A headband, a beautiful and versatile headpiece option, sits flat on the head and wraps down the sides. For the bride who wants to wear her hair down, the headband can be used to keep her hair away from her face. For the bride who wears her hair up, it can be wrapped around the bun. The headband is also a great option for the bride with shorter hair.

A double headband offers the most options. It can be worn flat like a headband, tilted forward like a tiara, or wrapped around a bun.

A very classical style is the bun ring. It is a complete circle of crystals that is worn around the bun.

A back piece is worn when you want a less prominent, but still glamorous, hair accessory. It is flattering to wear with a low bun or french twist hairstyle. A veil can be worn with this style.

A comb is a simple hair accessory that can be worn with almost any hairstyle, and can provide a less formal look.

A V-band is a type of headband that is worn around the forehead, dipping down to a slight “V” shape in the center. It draws attention to the face and is suited for only a few people, adding balance to a longer face shape.

Balance

All your wedding accessories (necklace, earrings, bracelet and headpiece) should work together to provide the finishing touches to your wedding dress and enhance your overall look. No one detail of your wedding ensemble should overwhelm the others. When you find the right tiara, it will be a beautiful accent to your face and the perfect complement for your wedding dress.
