Will he or won’t he? For most of history men have not worn wedding rings. It was not until World War II that it became popular for men to wear a wedding ring. Soldiers going off to war wanted to wear a wedding band to show their love and commitment for their wife back home. Since that time, mens wedding rings have become more common. Today, about as many men wear a wedding band as those that do not. It is a personal decision that is influenced by many factors, including comfort, safety, custom, culture, and religion.
(Note that the terms mens wedding rings and mens wedding bands are interchangeable, both meaning the same thing).
Safety! Many men work in occupations where they are forbidden or discouraged from wearing any jewelry, including wedding bands, such as actors, police, and electricians. For men working with machinery it can be quite dangerous to wear jewelry on the job. (This could apply to many women as well).
Comfort! For a man who wants to wear a wedding ring, it would be important to try on rings to see what ring style is comfortable on his ring finger. While most women enjoy wearing jewelry and are comfortable wearing jewelry, many men are not. A wedding ring may be the first piece of jewelry that they have considered wearing. The style, width, and material will all affect the comfort of the ring.
Matching Bands? Once a man decides on wearing a wedding ring, there are still many other decisions to make. Will the couple have matching wedding bands? Or will they each choose a style to their own liking? Although it is possible for the couple to wear perfectly matched bands, most times they vary in some respect. They may choose the same band style, but the man may wear a wider band that is better suited for a bigger, masculine hand, while the woman may wear a narrower version that is better suited to her smaller fingers. If the couple chooses non-matching bands to suit their individuality, they can still engrave them with matching messages of love.
Options! When choosing a wedding band, the options of styles and materials available are just as varied as the personalities and styles of men. Some men will prefer a simple unadorned band while other men will enjoy a highly decorated style with diamonds. Some men will prefer a low profile setting while some men will choose a chunkier style. Some men will prefer yellow gold, while other men will prefer platinum or white gold. Many non-traditional metals are gaining attention for mens wedding rings as well, especially titanium.
Traditional Half Round Wedding Bands These wedding bands are plain and classic in design. They are available in various widths and in yellow or white, 14kt gold or 18kt gold. The “comfort fit” wedding bands are slightly rounded on the inside of the rings, making them more comfortable to wear.
Two Tone Wedding Bands Two tone wedding bands are a combination of metals for the men that desire a little fancier look over the traditional plain bands. The metals used can be yellow gold, white gold, rose gold, or platinum.
Platinum Wedding Bands Platinum wedding bands usually are polished to a mirror finish to show off the metal’s best qualities. Platinum is very durable, will not wear away like gold, and is hypo-allergenic so it will not cause a skin reaction. While white gold is rhodium-plated for brightness and may require re-plating with time, platinum does not require such maintenance. However, platinum is also the most expensive precious metal and it will cost more to indulge in this luxury.
Titanium Wedding Bands With it's masculine look and appeal, titanium is increasing in popularity. Although it is incredibly light, it is also very durable. It's weightless feel makes it comfortable to wear. It is hypo-allergenic and will not cause a skin reaction. When choosing a titanium wedding band, it should not be less than aircraft grade. Titanium is affordable, but the one downside is that titanium bands cannot be re-sized.
Designer Wedding Bands A designer wedding band is usually more ornate and available in a variety of finishes, such as brushed, matte, polished, and Florentine. A designer wedding band would be a good choice for men who enjoy more decorative looks.
Diamond Wedding Bands A wedding band that is adorned with diamonds would appeal to men who enjoy highly decorated styles. A diamond wedding band can be a solitaire, a row, or a cluster of diamonds. In general, a diamond wedding band will be fancier and more expensive than an all metal wedding band.
While traditionally men do not wear as much jewelry as women, as more designs and styles of men's jewelry are available, more men are choosing to wear jewelry. For a wedding, if a man wants to wear jewelry, it would be entirely appropriate. Men have usually worn cufflinks, but may also choose to wear a link or diamond adorned bracelet or a diamond stud earring. As with women, jewelry is a reflection of style and personality and worn for enjoyment.
